Really worth a visit before going down to see the Fortaleza mountain. The museum is small but very informative, and available in English, Spanish and German which is not a standard on this island. Really worth a visit if you like to learn more about this magical place. Easy to parking and toilets are available.

This is a lovely little museum packed with information about and finds from the pre-hispanic fortress of La Fortaleza, providing fascinating information in movies and storyboards of the native Canarians who lived there. The museum has a small gift shop and, more importantly, knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic staff. A few hundred metres (an easy walk, even in the heat) along the road is the site of La Fortaleza itself: A massive razor backed monolith of rock, peppered with caves used for habitation and burials. One dramatic cave pierces right through the mountain. At the foot of Fortaleza is a partially excavated pre-Hispanic village where the thick walls and foundations of the houses can clearly be seen. La Fortaleza is a great day out, both for the archaeology and the dramatic scenery. Don't be put off by the long and winding road that takes you there.

If you like to take in some local history and have transport then visit La Fortaleza and museum, the site isn't accessable for wheel and push chairs or anyone with mobility issues, the museum is. There isn't a vast amount to see which makes what there is easily digestible to all. The museum was €4 for adults and €2 for children and the staff couldn't do enough for us, it all made for a pleasant, informative and inexpensive afternoon out.

We stopped here just to see what it was like, and it turned out to be one of the hidden gems of the holiday. The centre itself was very informative and the staff couldn't do enough for us. They even came to get us when they were staying the English version of the video. The exhibits eye clearly presented and full of good, engaging, detail. We then drove on to Fortaleza itself. This is a sight not to be missed. We climbed up to see the views, the caves and even a cave painting. We will check it's authenticity when we go back though. Fortaleza must have been a difficult life when it was inhabited, and getting change to see some of the living spaces first hand brought this home. Especially in 35°c heat. This is a top recommendation for Gran Canaria.

FAB place to visit. The staff had great knowledge, the young man just wanted to tell us so much. They speak perfect English, so no excuse for not going if your Spanish is not 100 %. All the signs are in Spanish, English and some in German as well.

Very interesting 15/20 min film regarding the cave dwellers of the region. Also some amazing archeological finds, especially the skeletons. Very friendly staff. Great value at 4 euros and a nice clean loo!

When combined with an archeological site, Centro de Interpretación de la Fortaleza is a really interesting place, giving you an insight on how the life looked like before Spanish conquest. A must-see.
