Kumon Math and Reading Center of Monroe

I brought my child in for a reading placement test, and the experience was deeply disappointing. The center opened late, and there were no introductions or clear communication. My daughter was asked to begin the test without any explanation or effort to help her feel at ease. I was quickly separated and given a form to fill out, and when I asked questions, the owner declined to engage and insisted I simply read a pamphlet and provide payment information. After the test, the results were discussed openly in front of my child in a way that was discouraging and insensitive. The owner asked her to redo parts she struggled with, and when she couldn’t, she was made to feel embarrassed. Attempts to express concern were dismissed, and I was even asked, “Why did you come here then?” We will not be returning. This environment was not supportive or professional, and I would not recommend it to other families.

This place should NOT be in business. I thought I was getting my 6th grade daughter help in math. She was given packets on a kindergarten level for weeks. When I asked why she was still working on one plus one I was yelled at in the waiting room that they are “not a tutoring center” instead of explaining how they work which should have been done at the initial assessment. When I signed my daughter up at the free assessment, the owner told me “I was lucky I found her because of how bad of shape my daughter was in.” It’s not worth saving a few dollars with the plan and the way that they treat the kids. My daughter was never even looked at. Or asked if she had questions the few times that we went before quitting. I was then put into collections. Spend the money and get a real tutor or go elsewhere.

This review is for the Monroe, NY site. The first couple months we were happy with what we saw happening at Kumon. Then things started to decline. After almost year a Kumon I questioned why my son wasn’t progressing like the director said he would. She blamed it on our two vacations and that he was so far behind from Covid. Then as we approached the second year, his teachers were asking questions for me to ask to Kumon and the director couldn’t give valid answers instead I was met with the Kumon sales ad pitch and excuses. His teachers then suggested we do tutoring in addition to Kumon because it would service him better. Come February when the work got harder I noticed my son was inside for 2-2.5 hours. When I came into the classroom to find out what was going on, I found him in the corner alone struggling on the verge of tears. We were told the students have to come to the site in order to work with the teachers one on one. I found out that wasn’t happening. That my son was left to sit alone and struggle in tears. We had him enrolled so that he could get the additional instruction. Not excessive amounts of work having to teach himself new material. The director apologized and promised it wouldn’t happen again and that she and her teachers will make sure they work with him one on one. It happened a couple more times and again she was “sorry” and gave another excuse for her and her teaching assistants. Fast forward to present…This went on multiple time without my knowledge until yesterday. My son was left AGAIN to struggle for almost 2 hours. When I questioned her, she says sometimes they day dream and this happens. Now my son doesn’t daydream. He freezes when there’s something he doesn’t know. A learning process my son struggles with that she and I have discussed at length from the beginning. Something she would know and remember if she was actually working with my son every week like she was supposed to for the past 2 years. After pinning her down with questioning the only thing she yells to me is “what do you want me to do?” I told her, “your job…which clearly none of are doing”. I don’t recommend this site unless you’re just looking for a place to drop your kid off and you don’t care about their education. This site is only in it to take advantage parents who are concerned about their kids and exploit the parents and students for money. Parents beware! I

The tutoring service provided out of the Monroe office has sharply deteriorated. Today my son was denied tutoring service because they wanted to leave early. They are only open for 3 hours on Saturday, you would think they could actually work all of them.

Mr. and Mrs Dong are very helpful. The staffs really care about children and their learnings. My child started Kumon at age three. He is 12 years old now still doing Kumon. In the long run, it taught him to be responsible for his work at school and home. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Dong.

A great stepping stone for kids and a boost to their skills ib both math and english. Shirley is awesome she has rhe experience and expertise for the longest in our area.

I have been calling this location for over 3 weeks to make an appointment to sign my child up, and no response.
